The appraisal meeting

While social distancing rules are in place, the appraisal discussion will take place virtually on a platform agreed between you and your appraiser.

As it is taking place via video link, then care must be taken to avoid discussion of sensitive identifiable information unless the platform meets NHS England’s data protection requirements (Microsoft Teams does).

For GPs in NHSE Southwest no face to face appraisals will take place for the foreseeable future.

The appointment will usually take 2 to 4 hours to complete.

The appraisal will focus on your professional development and wellbeing.

Most GPs find the appraisal is supportive and encouraging, but it may contain some challenges and guidance on how to improve.

Have paper and pen handy to take notes of these suggestions.

At the end of the appointment you will be asked to draw up a personal development plan (PDP) for the forthcoming year.

It is helpful if you have already thought about this before the appraisal.
