The appraisal meeting

The appraisal discussion will take place virtually on a video conferencing platform agreed between you and your appraiser.

Alternatively the meeting may take place face to face.

You must ensure you are in a place where:
  • you can not be overheard
  • you will not be disturbed
  • you are comfortable
  • you have a suitable device connected to the internet
  • there is a secure and adequate broadband connection

You may wish to have a drink, paper and pen handy.

The appointment will usually take 2 to 4 hours to complete.

Its OK to have a break, just tell the appraiser.

The appraisal will focus on your professional development and wellbeing.

Most GPs find the appraisal is supportive and encouraging, but it may contain some challenges and guidance on how to improve.

At the end of the appointment you will be asked to draw up a personal development plan (PDP) for the forthcoming year.

It is helpful if you have already thought about this before the appraisal.
