Advice in a new ROAN information sheet says it is now possible to have an appraisal via a video link but not by telephone.

However the circumstances under which this would be permitted are strictly limited and it requires the permission of the responsible officer first.

A new report show what a positive process appraisal is, as perceived by GPs.

Based on feedback from 13,440 GPs in England on their 2018/19 appraisal it shows:

• 91% of GPs report that their appraisal was useful for promoting quality improvement in their work
• 88% of GPs found their appraisal useful for improving patient care
• 89% report that their appraisal was useful for personal development
• 89 - 92% report that their appraisal was useful for professional development
• 97% fed back that they were happy with the skills of their appraiser
